Sydney Cross, age 10, of Mount Shasta, was recognized at the Junior Giants Willie Mac Award Luncheon on Nov. 7 at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
Sydney was nominated for the Junior Giants Willie Mac Award by commissioner Mike Rodriguez and coach Mark Teague.
The award is given to a select group of coaches and players for their commitment to the Junior Giants program and dedication to their communities.
Out of over 16,000 players who play Junior Giants baseball, which is the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, Sydney was one of only 39 youth to receive the honor.
She received a bat signed by Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, which was awarded to her by another Willie Mac Award Winner – Mike “Tiny” Felder.
The event was hosted by Giants announcer Renel Brooks-Moon,
Junior Giants is a free, noncompetitive program offered to kids in inner cities and rural communities throughout California, Oregon and Nevada.
Sydney was recognized for her leadership and integrity, according to Rodriguez and Teague, along with her willingness to be a team player and encourage her fellow players. Her father is Mount Shasta Police Chief Parish Cross, who encourages her involvement in the program, according to a press release from the Junior Giants.
The Willie Mac Award is named in honor of Willie McCovey and is the Junior Giants’ version of the annual award given to a San Francisco Giants player by his teammates. Every year, the “junior” version of the honor is presented to the players and coaches who best exemplify the Four Bases of Character Development that are emphasized by the Junior Giants program: Confidence, Integrity, Leadership and Teamwork.
