Mount Shasta, Calif. -

After discussing the Siskiyou Union High School District Student Athlete Handbook at  its regular session meeting held at Happy Camp High School on Wednesday July 9 the board of trustees approved it.
The handbook has been under revision for the past six months following an incident involving transportation guidelines, road game supervision and disciplinary measures as they related to an incident that occurred when the Mount Shasta High School basketball team played in an out of town tournament late last year.
In conjunction with the California Interscholastic Federation’s goal of “Pursuing Victory With Honor,” the approved handbook and code states that athletic competition should be fun as well as be a significant part of a sound educational program that emphasizes trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
It was announced at the meeting that Mount Shasta High School Senior Mariah Baker received a $20,000 scholarship from Chaminade University in Honolulu based on her participation and performance in the National History Day.
“Its a wonderful achievement for Mariah after all the work she put into her project,” said Karen Holmes, who organizes the History Day event in Siskiyou County. “She deserves the award and recognition.”
Baker’s project was based on the Tuskegee Airmen in conjunction with the theme of this year’s event “Conflict and Compromise in History.”
Happy Camp High School principal Alan Dyar reported that the school scored 100 percent in a competition of driver and passenger seatbelt use. The money the school received was used to buy flash drives, backpacks and sweatshirts.
It was also announced by Dyar that the Happy Camp High School class of 2008 received over $46,000 in grants and scholarships.
The Board discussed the possibility of floating a bond measure to pay for school repairs. Following the discussion it was determined that a Bond consultant needs to be contacted to determine the best way to proceed. Given the time frame, it was decided that it may not be possible to do everything necessary by the November election and that it may be better to try for a special election in June.
The Board approved concurrent enrollment at COS, CIF representatives to League, and the Williams Quarterly Report.
Members George Winkelman, Lori Harch, Margaret DeBortoli, John Hines, George Chambers and Velma Nile were present with Arlandus Clark absent.
The next Board of Trustees regular meeting is scheduled for August 13 at McCloud High School at 3:30 p.m.
