A seventeen year old girl was the victim of a hit and run accident that occurred near the junction of South Weed Blvd. and Boles Ave. at approximately 7:30 p.m. last Thursday.
She was released from Mercy Medical in Redding at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, having sustained a fractured skull, according to her friend, Joe Martin.  “Right now, she needs a lot of sleep,” said Martin, adding that she would be ok.
Eyewitness Tom Von Lahr II, described the incident as ‘horrific’.
“I heard this yell and then,  an instant later as I was looking up, she was hit by the car and thrown about 20 to 25 before she hit the ground,” said Von Lahr. “The car did not slow down or swerve.”
According to Von Lahr,  the girl was dragged an additional seven feet under the car but was not run over by its tires.
“I ran up to the car and yelled at the driver to back up,” he said, noting that the car, which he identified as a white, four-door Toyota Camry with tinted windows and Oregon plates, then backed up and drove around her, pulling over to the curb.
Von Lahr said he did what he could to comfort  the girl and protect her from the continuing stream of traffic.
“When I looked up, maybe forty-five seconds later, the car that hit her was gone,” said Von Lahr. “People were standing there motionless, like they were watching a bonfire.”
Von Lahr estimated that the Weed Police arrived within three minutes and an emergency medical response team shortly thereafter.
According to the Weed Police, witnesses could not identify the occupant(s) of the vehicle or get a license plate number.  The police also reported that the victim was talking on a cell phone when she was hit.
Martin said he was the one that the victim was talking to when she got hit.  “She screamed and then the line went dead,” said Martin.
Von Lahr said the incident made a strong impression on him.  “Thank God that girl lived,” he said.
There has been no additional information about the vehicle that struck her or its occupants. The case is currently under investigation.
