Sergeant Gilbert Gonzales, who has lived in McCloud most of his life, recently reenlisted in the US Army and applied for assignment to a Ranger Unit. He completed Airborne Jump School in June and is scheduled to attend Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia.
The son of Debra Delgado, of Van Nuys, and the grandson of Louis and Sharon Delgado of McCloud and Joseph Gonzales of Washington, Gonzales served a 15 month deployment to Iraq starting in August 2004.
He received the Combat Infantry Badge while serving in Mosul, Rahwah and Baghdad. After 15 months, his unit came home to Fort Wainwright.
This past February, Gonzales graduated from the “Warrior Leader Course” of Non-Commissioned Officers Academy at Fort Richardson, in Anchorage Alaska.
He received the “Distinguished Leadership Award” and was placed on the Commanding Officer’s list, which is based on the top 20 percent. Gonzales was 6th out of 72 and one of 14 who had presented superior military appearance and bearing.
He received his present rank during a ceremony with his unit at Fort Wainwright.
He previously passed the Sergeants Test in January 2008. He tested for and received the Expert Infantry Badge and was selected to take the Silver Spurs test. He received his “Silver Spurs” at an awards ceremony in August, 2007.
Gonzales attended McCloud schools from kindergarten through his high school graduation in 2003. In July 2003 he enlisted in the Army and received his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. In November, 2003, he was assigned to The 172nd Cavalry Stryker Unit, stationed at Fort Wainwright
Natasha Remillard
Army Pfc. Natasha A. Remillard, a 2005 graduate of Dunsmuir High School, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC.
During the nine weeks of training, according to a news release from Army & Air Force Hometown News, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
She is the daughter of Charlene Huggins of Dunsmuir and the sister of Jamie Cox of Rio Linda.
