Siskiyou County supervisors this week approved holding a public forum to review and take comments about the planned removal of Klamath River dams. The forum is scheduled for April 1 at the Yreka Community Theater, 812 North Oregon St. in Yreka.
Two sessions will be held with the goal of providing access to as many interested citizens as possible, one from 2 to 5 p.m. and the other from 6 p.m. until “completion.”
Following final comments at the later meeting, the board is expected “to deliberate on how it will proceed with the dam agreement process,” according to county counsel Tom Guarino.
Representatives from the US Department of Interior, the state of California and PacifiCorp have been invited and are expected to attend, said Guarino.
The board directed that invitations to attend and to speak at the forum be sent to elected officials in Congress from both California and Oregon and to state legislators representing affected counties in both states.
Also on the invitation list are governors from each state and gubernatorial candidates.
In other actions at the March 9 supervisors’ meeting in Yreka:
• The board approved a decision to delete three positions in the Siskiyou Modoc Regional Department of Child Support Services. The deteriorating economy was cited as the reason for the cutback, which is expected to save $147,071 annually.
• The board received a report on current operations of the auditor/controller’s office by Pamela Kindig, who was hired as a consultant to do a transitional review of the office due to numerous changes that have taken place recently. Recommendations for increased effectiveness and efficiencies were also presented.
• A transfer of $15,000 was approved from the Hospital Preparedness Program grant to reimburse Mercy Medical Center Mount Shasta for a purchase made to assist with emergency response to bio-terrorism and infectious disease outbreaks. The purchase was for a respirator fit tester.
