The Siskiyou Golden Fair officially closed on Sunday at 5 p.m. after a five-day run. This year’s fair featured a variety of events, including the Xtremely Amped motocross show, a tiger show and the world premier of a documentary on a local band.
Preliminary fair attendance figures show an estimated four percent increase over 2007 with total attendance of 54,020, according to Fair CEO Rebecca Desmond.
The Fair did get one jolt of bad news when Clay Walker, who was scheduled to be this year’s feature concert performer, suddenly cancelled his performance.
Among the many winners at this year’s Fair was Laramie Collins of Edgewood, who won a $570 prize as the bull riding champion.
Kaylee Pimentel of Montague took top honors at the KSYC Siskiyou Superstars Talent Show last Wednesday night. The 18-year-old will now travel to Sacramento to compete in the State Fair Star competition at the California State Fair on Labor Day. She won a trophy and $250 on Wednesday night.
Second place winner in the 16-28 age category was Tony Crisi from Mount Shasta, winning a trophy and $100. First in the 29 and over category was Becky Patti from Yreka winning a trophy and $250 and second place went to Robert Harrison of Yreka, who received $100 and a trophy.
Youth Talent Show winner was Victoria Gamache, 12, or Fort Jones.
The Diaper Derby winner was Aydyn Davis, 11 months, or Yreka.
According to Desmond, Clay Walker cancelled after his wife delivered their baby two weeks early and he had flown back to Houston, Texas to be with her.
He had originally intended to fly to Yreka on Thursday but decided late on Wednesday to stay with his wife and new son instead.
The show went on with Clay Walker’s band, featuring their keyboard player on vocals, opening for Steve Holy, the other act on the concert line-up.
Concert ticket holders were being offered a full or partial refund.
