“A phenomenal success” is how Butteville Elementary Principal Todd Clark described Saturday night’s Art Auction and Wine Tasting event held at the Lake Shastina Golf Resort.
Clark has a passion for the arts as does Butteville’s board and Parent Teacher Organization. Together they decided to organize the event to raise money to support the school’s art and music programs that have suffered due to funding cuts.
The event brought in about $10,000 from the auction and ticket sales. But that’s not all, Clark said they received a $10,000 matching grant from the McConnell Foundation. “We literally doubled our money,” said Clark. “We’re ecstatic.”

The funds will be used to “start a string program in combination with our current band program to eventually become the Butteville Youth Orchestra,” said Clark. They will also be starting a K-8 Honor Choir. Clark says he has students at the school with beautiful voices.
Other programs they are looking to develop include “funding more artist involvement and art projects like the ones we saw developed for the event.”
Each classroom created a beautiful, unique art piece that was sold during the live auction portion of the evening. Steve Darger said he was very pleased to see how good the art from the school was. “It’s a really fine event.”
Nikolas Allen and Brenda Woods were entertaining auctioneers for the event. “Let’s keep the kids in mind. We want to give to the kids’ art programs,” said Allen as he started the auction. He had no problem encouraging bidding on the children’s art due to the beauty and quality of the projects, plus parents were anxious to purchase pieces for sentimental reasons. Shelly Pappas won the bid on her son’s classroom chess set. “It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s something I will keep forever,” she said.
The event was held in the Lake Shastina Golf Resort’s Putters Sunset Bar and Grill. Guests were treated to hors d’oeuvres prepared by the resort’s chef Chris Harding. Wines, for tasting, were provided by Alpen Cellars, Matson Vineyards, Shasta View Vineyards, and Weisingers. While mingling and tasting wine, guests enjoyed live music by Paula and Dave Reynolds, Champion Club, and Good Food.
“This is awesome, an excellent idea,” said Neva Barnett.
Clark said, “People really enjoy supporting the arts in school. It’s something the schools clearly can’t afford to do. That makes people feel good, to be doing something fun and support the arts.”

Throughout the evening, guests were able to bid on about 60 other items in a silent auction, including photos, paintings, wine, a quilt, wood crafted pieces, and drawings from local artists.
After auctioning the children’s art, the live auction continued with pieces by local artists Joyce Kyle, Kelly Samuelson, Linda Darger, Lindsay Budner, Robert Caillier, Mark Stensaas, Brenda Woods, Sabine Kent, Stuart Allen Walker, Willo Balfrey, William Wareham and Noble Dins. Clark also created and donated a watercolor painting titled “Art Around the Mountain.”
Eva Mitchell, co-president with Sandra Haugen of Butteville’s PTO, said she estimated about 160 in attendance. “We wanted to reach out beyond our Butteville community,” she said. Clark said they estimated about 90 to 100 tickets sold in advance and the rest at were purchased at the door.
To put on an event like this, Clark said they had “a lot of support from every realm. We really appreciate and thank the community at large for supporting us.”
He said Sandra Haugen and Eva Mitchell “are incredible. They can organize anything.” He praised the supportive planning committee of about 15, thanked Linda Darger for helping to organize the event, Stephanie Shaver for coordinating the music, and the Duchis for donating the use of the resort.
