McCloud residents will get a chance to weigh in on the fate of their high school during a community forum to be scheduled sometime in the next few months.
The Siskiyou Union High School board discussed the pros and cons of keeping McCloud High School open for a small number of students at their regular meeting last Wednesday evening.
Board members Lori Harch, Susan Tavalero, Joe Blevins, Linda Wallace, Margaret DeBortoli and Jay Clark learned that keeping McCloud open financially benefits the entire district, and by closing the school, the district would lose approximately $58,000 in annual revenue.
Currently, 11 students are enrolled at McCloud. Five Community Day School students also utilize the McCloud campus, said principal Ed Stokes.
Though the financial side of the argument is very strong to keep McCloud open, Matheson said other considerations must be made – most importantly, the quality of education at the school.
At this time, Matheson said he believes McCloud students are getting an outstanding education in a small school setting. However, a greater variety of electives and extracurricular activities might enhance their school experience, said board member Wallace.
The meeting will be scheduled sometime in the next six weeks and all with an opinion on the fate of McCloud High School are invited to attend.
