The McCloud Community Services District board of directors plans to take up the issue of whether or not to renew negotiations with Nestlé Waters North America during their next regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 26, at Scout Hall in McCloud.
The meeting, which is open to the public, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
After an extended period of discussion during their Jan. 12 meeting, MCSD directors decided to postpone their decision. Nestlé, which abandoned a previous contract with the district, has requested new negotiations that allow the company to build a water bottling facility in McCloud. The new project, asserted company representative Dave Palais, would be a scaled down version of the original project in regards to both the size of the facility and the amount of water used.
The specifics of the revised plan have yet to be revealed, but the company has already scheduled an informational meeting to be held on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at McCloud Elementary School.
The meeting, according to a recent Nestlé press release, is an “opportunity for the McCloud community to weigh in on the company’s reduced project proposal in McCloud.”
“We look forward to this opportunity to provide the McCloud community with more details about our revised project proposal, and, more importantly, to hearing feedback directly from the community on our proposal,” said Palais.
Joining Palais for the forum On Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at McCloud Elementary School will be Brendan O’Rourke, Director of Natural Resources for Nestlé Waters North America.
The upcoming presentation by Nestlé will be the second community forum held by the multi-national corporation. The first meeting took place last October and was run by the consulting firm Kearns and West. That meeting was subject to a barrage of criticism from those attending, many claiming that it was poorly run, lacking in both focus and substance.
At the last MCSD meeting, Palais himself acknowledged, “The first (Kearns and West) meeting did not go so well.” He said that, since then, the consulting firm was fired and Nestlé will be handling the upcoming forum.
Palais reiterated that “anything is open for discussion,” and that “The community’s feedback, in conjunction with the additional scientific studies that will be conducted on the revised project, will be used shape the project proposal and develop a draft environmental impact report on the project.”
The next McCloud Community Services District meeting is scheduled for Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. in Scout Hall, 405 E. Colombero Ave. McCloud. At this meeting, the MCSD board of directors will be deciding on whether to consider a re-negotiated contract at the present time.
Nestlé’s informational meeting, intended to promote a direct dialogue between the company and concerned citizens, as well as to provide more information about their new proposal, is scheduled for Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at McCloud Elementary School, 332 Hamilton Way in McCloud.
