McCloud High School Principal Ed Stokes, teachers and staff welcomed eight students back to school Monday morning.
Also welcomed on board was new full-time teacher Jeff Michael, who will be teaching history and PE, along with two electives: Service Learning and Personal Finance.
“I am excited to be here,” said Michael, “and because the school is small, I can get some personal connections with the kids.”
Michael said he wants the students to get out into the community more through the Service Learning class.
“In the Personal Finance class, I will be teaching the basic ideas of budgeting, investing, and how to buy a house,” Michael said.
Born and raised in Eureka, Calif., Michael was a truck driver for 20 years but decided he needed a change to something better to suit him as he got older.
He got his teaching credentials at Humboldt State University in Arcata and moved to the area Aug. 1.
In his spare time he likes to go snowboarding, hiking and kayaking.
According to school secretary Mary Butzlaff, “Part time teacher Ms. Alves will be teaching two sections of Culinary Arts and English, and part time teacher Mr. Spaulding will be teaching Woodshop, Math and Science.
McCloud High School junior William DeLano, 17, said he prefers a smaller school.
“It works out good for me,” said DeLano. “I tried Mount Shasta, but there were too many people for me. Teachers here are more one on one, and I feel I can get a better education. Hopefully this year will be a good year with our new teacher.”
Adult school
The first day of Siskiyou Adult School, which meets from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evenings on the campus of Jefferson High School in Mt Shasta, will be Tuesday, September 6, said Butzlaff. “Any person 18 years of age or older can prepare to take the GED tests or can work toward an adult school diploma.
Siskiyou Adult School has an independent study option, and anyone who missed out on high school graduation should investigate this valuable resource. Michael Kirwin is currently the adult school teacher.”
