Hugs were shared and tears were shed Tuesday evening after the Mount Shasta Recreation and Parks District board  of directors voted unanimously to decline an offer from T-Mobile to erect a cell tower in Shastice Park.
The group of over 50 citizens who attended the meeting at the Mount Shasta City Park were ecstatic with the decision, which was made after an hour of public comment.
Fears of cell towers causing health problems, as well as aesthetic concerns and a possible negative effect on tourism were the major complaints made by the audience.
Board member Kim Solga said she voted the way she did not because she feared a tower would be a health hazard, but because she believes parks should be a refuge, and if there is a perception of danger within the community, they will no longer be able to enjoy the parks.
Each of the board members, including chairman Peter Van Susteren, Yvonne Malee, Laurel Harkness, Sean Doyle and Solga thanked the attendees for their interest and dedication to the Mount Shasta City Parks, and said they look forward to working with each of them to make the parks even better.
