Siskiyou Union High School District Superintendent Doug Squellati resigned this week with two years remaining on his three year contract.
District trustee George Winkelman said Squellati called him last week and tendered his resignation.
“It caught me completely   by surprise,” Winkelman said.  “All we can do is move ahead now and find a new qualified superintendent. We would like to hire someone as soon as possible but we need to make sure we get a candidate that’s right for the position.”
During a special meeting of the district board held Tuesday morning it was disclosed by Winkelman that former SUHSD superintendent Richard Holmes has tentatively agreed to serve as superintendent on an interim basis until the vacancy is filled.
After the board formally agreed to accept the resignation of Squellati and authorized payment for days  worked in excess of contract, it was agreed that they would meet again on Monday July 7, at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the situation and possibly take action on retaining another superintendent.
Trustees indicated they are open to suggestions from the public as to possible candidates and recruiting strategies and would prefer not to spend another $12,000 in the process to hire a superintendent like they did in the process of hiring Squellati.
Squellati did not attend the special meeting Tuesday morning and could not be reached for comment.
