The theme for this year’s Dunsmuir Railroad Days celebration, scheduled for June 13, 14 and 15, is “Bringing it Back to the Community.”
The plan for this year, according to new committee chair Merry Padilla, was to “revive your grandparents’ event.”
Plenty of music, dancing in the streets, games for kids, softball, booths and other attractions and activities are scheduled.
A three inning Dad’s Softball game is scheduled to be held at the ball park following the end of the men’s softball tournament on Sunday evening.
Fri. and Sun will feature a dunk tank on lower Pine St. and on Sat. from 7 – 11 a.m. a Children’s Fishing Derby will be held below the bridge at the Dunsmuir central exit. From 7:30 to 11 a.m. a Rotary Pancake Breakfast will be at St. John’s Parrish Hall on Willow Ave. And at 9 a.m. there will be a Diaper Derby and the Lil’ Engineer contest at the Children’s Park.
Events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 10 a.m. until the end of the Dad’s Softball game.
Much music is scheduled on the Upper Pine Street stage, including Malcolm, the Village Harpist, Mountain Gypsies (belly dancing), Peddicord and Friends, Siskiyou Blues Society Jam Band, Ron Lovelace, Locomotives, Ron, Ruthie (Ravin’ Moon), Angus and Chad, Shivo (Nathnaga), and Jist Us.
The Rotary Club of Dunsmuir will hold its 29th annual Railroad Days Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning.
A parade will leave Oak Street at noon and will travel north from Oak St. to the Travelodge on Dunsmuir Ave. It will feature classic cars and tractors, horses, floats, people and animals in costume, fire trucks and sheriff cars.
A children's train mural painting will take place on lower Pine St. on Saturday from 10:00 am - 8:00 pm.
Food, craft and non-profit booths will be plentiful on Upper Pine St.
This year’s Railroad Days t-shirt was designed by Shery Larson.
Some controversy has swirled around this year’s event because Union Pacific will not be bringing historic railroad cars and there will be no speeder car rides.
Padilla said she volunteered to be the Railroad Days committee chair after it looked like this year’s event might not happen.
“I felt it was important to retain our heritage,” she said.
She said she recruited a committee that eventually included 16 people.
After several years of having no beer sales on the streets, Padilla said the committee voted to return beer sales as a way for the Eagles and Lions to raise funds.
The committee originally voted to have the trains come, “but we weren’t able to come up with the funds,” Padilla said, noting that it would cost $6,500 for the trains.
And UP’s insurance carrier’s liability will not allow there to be any activity on the tracks where beer is sold on the streets, even if the beer is sold in beer gardens.
Padilla said the committee decided 100 percent to support our Eagles and Lions in the selling of beer as their yearly fundraiser, which they were not able to do the last three years.”
