All Fourth of July revelers beware: law enforcement will be prevalent this week in the Mount Shasta area, including a sobriety checkpoint that will be set up the night of July 4 on the 1,000 block of N. Mt. Shasta Blvd.
As part of the Siskiyou County Avoid the 8 DUI Campaign, the sobriety checkpoint is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on July 4th. The 1,000 block of N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. is near Cross Petroleum.
The checkpoint was announced on Wednesday, too late for the information to be included in Mt. Shasta Area Newspapers’ July 1 print or E-edition.
Task Force operations and saturation patrols are also scheduled from July 3 to 5 throughout Siskiyou County, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Department.
“Extra DUI Roving Patrols will be conducted county-wide by all of the law enforcement agencies of Siskiyou County’s AVOID the 8 DUI Enforcement program and officers from the California Highway Patrol,” according to the press release.
As part of a California Highway Patrol Maximum Enforcement Period: the CHP says 80% of all available officers will be assigned to the region’s freeways and unincorporated roads beginning 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Sunday.
“This is intended to be preventative,” said Capt. John Villani of the Sheriff’s Department. “We don’t want to make a lot of arrests; we hope we get none. It’s for people to be more aware and not be drunk.”
“Driving while drunk isn’t worth the tremendous risk,” Sheriff Rick Riggins states in a press release. “No matter your age, if you’ve had too much holiday spirit, you’d better find a safe and sober ride home or your chances of arrest are high.”
The following suggestions are made “for a safe and festive holiday...”
• Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin;
• Before drinking, designate a sober driver and give that person your keys;
• If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely;
• If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, call 9-1-1.
