To shine a light on the dangers of substance abuse, Mount Shasta High School is celebrating National Drug Facts Awareness Week this year in a big way.
Seniors Allison Titus and Sara Rogers and sophomore Weston Stroud are coordinating the week’s events, which include the painting of Graffiti Bridge, a community-wide gathering at the Berryvale parking lot on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and an informative school assembly the day after.
Graffiti Bridge was painted yesterday morning with the words, “We’ve been lied to” on one side and “In memory of those who lost their lives to substance abuse” on the other. Community members are invited to add messages to their own loved ones who have died as a result of substance abuse.
“A lot of what we have been told about drugs isn’t true,” Titus said in explanation of the slogan. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and the lies come from both sides. ‘We’ve been lied to’ is a demand to know the truth.”
Lies come from manufacturers, advertisers, parents and friends, Stroud pointed out, and it’s important to get the facts out there so people can make informed choices.
On Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., the school will host “Remembering You: A Battle Against Substance Abuse” in the Berryvale parking lot. A luminary ceremony will acknowledge those who have struggled with addiction, and students will share their observations about drugs, alcohol and tobacco use. Local therapist John Cunningham will be the evening’s guest speaker, and Greg Eastman’s Jazz and Chamber Choirs will perform.
The following day, the students are organizing an inspirational and fact-filled school-wide assembly, which will reveal some of the truths about substance abuse, said Rogers.
As a culmination to the week’s events, the Mount Shasta Community Resource Center will host a Drug Facts presentation by Maggie Shepherd, the Siskiyou County Office of Education’s prevention coordinator on Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Shepherd will give information to help people make informed choices.
