Both Dunsmuir school boards held mostly housekeeping meetings this month. The lull ends soon, with Dunsmuir Elementary School opening its doors for the new year Aug. 23, and Dunsmuir High School starting nearly a week earlier, Aug. 17.
The big news out of the DES meeting Aug. 4 was the rehiring of a teacher let go earlier this year because of budget cuts. With the resignation of Rich Belzer and with Barbara Ulbrich leaving teaching to take over as school principal, enough funds were freed up to bring back 8th grade teacher Danielle Davis.
Belzer resigned to take a teaching position in Hawaii. The DES board voted unanimously 3-0 to rehire Davis.
Board members Steve Rogers and Ellen McArron were not present.
The board also unanimously approved hiring Marci Davis as the new cafeteria assistant.
DES extracurricular assignments
Stipend positions for various positions were approved for the following personnel and amounts:
Athletic Director: Susan Keeler, $1,500; SITE Coordinator: Tammy Ridge, salary to be announced; Student Activities: Danelle Davis and Donna Clark, $1,000 (split); Technology Coordinator: Susan Keeler, $5,000; and Yearbook Coordinator: Richard McCormack, $500.
Several sports leadership positions were assigned as well. Girls Basketball Coach, Carl Smith; Cheer Coach, Donna Clark; Cross Country Coach, Susan Keeler; Volleyball Coach, Donna Clark; and Track Coach, Susan Keeler.
Stipends represent payment for the entire school year.
DES actions
The DES board voted unanimously on two other agenda items. One was the approval of the school year's minimum days. “Teachers get together to work on new concepts,” said school superintendent Cindy Rinne. “We also use them for parent conferences.”
The other action was to approve raising school lunch prices. The need for this increase, from $2.50 to $3.00 was attributed to rising costs.
DES classes restructured
Due to declining enrollment, Susan Anro will teach a split 2nd-3rd grade class, which will commence in a classroom that was used for storage last year. The new class will bring youngsters down to the lower quad, leaving only the pre-school and K-1 in the upper.
Rinne said that Anro set up her classroom herself, and that she painted the walls and hung shelves.
Current enrollment stands at 145, but Rinne said that may change. Last minute enrollments could cause need for another teacher. That, along with the unpredictable funding environment at state level, led Rinne to recommend moving the regular board meeting from Sept. 8 to Sept. 1 to deal with any last-minute changes.
The Sept. 1 meeting date coincides with that of the Dunsmuir High School board, which has moved its regular meetings to the first Thursday of the month. After Sept. 1, the DES board will go back to its regular meeting times of 6 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month.

The board went into closed session and emerged 45 minutes later with no reportable action.
Dunsmuir High actions
In contrast to the two and a quarter hour Aug 4. DES board meeting this month, the DHS board moved quickly through its agenda last Thursday night. All five board members present voted unanimously to:
• Approve a Declaration of Need to retain English and writing teach Juliette Charter. School superintendent Len Foreman said that since Charter is not credentialed in writing, the school had to submit the Declaration, stating that no credentialed staff was available in the area to take the position.
• Elect newest trustee Richard McCormack as board clerk, taking the position previously held by Kathleen Shirley, whom he replaced on the board after she resigned.
Approve calendar of board meetings for the 2011/2012 school year, 6 p.m. the first Thursday of each month.
Dunsmuir High reports
Foreman reported that the modernization project would be wrapping up a bit late, with new windows arriving in about seven to eight weeks. He said that due to new state regulations, the school must re-certify every six months on planned projects. If it fails to submit records in time, the school would fall to the bottom of the list for funding, according to Foreman.
He said that heating and air conditioning projects were on the drawing board, approved but not funded.
