Investigators are still combing over the Siskiyou County Courthouse for clues to lead them to two men who broke in early Feb.1 and made off with an estimated $3 million in historic gold nuggets.
Visitors to the courthouse are still using the back entrance, and personnel from the California Department of Justice are continuing to search and catalogue DNA, hair and fiber evidence found near the gold display, which was broken with a heavy object, Giannini said.
It is unknown why the silent alarm in the gold display case did not alert authorities to the scene, said Siskiyou County Sheriff spokesperson Allison Giannini. The thieves are thought to have gained access to the courthouse through an open window in the back. The courthouse itself does not have an alarm system, Giannini said.
