The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department has released descriptions of two people based on surveillance camera images taken inside the County Courthouse while historic gold nuggets were being stolen in the early morning hours of Feb. 1, 2012.
Detectives were continuing to review images and are expected to release security footage Friday morning, according to a press release from public information officer Allison Giannini.
The Sheriff’s Office says it has contacted Secret Witness and hopes “to be able to offer a reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the two individuals involved,” according to Giannini. “The Siskiyou County Sheriffs Department has been working tirelessly to find the individuals that have stolen not only gold but a piece of our history.”
The suspects are described as follows:
“Suspect 1 is a white male adult approximately 20-25 years old. He was wearing a mask, black short sleeve shirt, blue jeans, black shoes and had white socks covering his hands. He was carrying a black and blue backpack.”
“Suspect 2 is a white male adult approximately 20-25 years old. He was also wearing a mask, black long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, black shoes and brown gloves.”
Anyone who has any information regarding either of the suspects or the gold theft is asked to contact Siskiyou County Sheriff's Detectives at 530-841-2900.
Initial reports estimated the value of the stolen gold at $3 million. The Sheriff’s Office says an inventory of the gold is being conducted by the Siskiyou County Treasurer and Auditor-Controller in an attempt “to ascertain an exact value of what was taken.”
