Grenada resident Larry Crawford had a special birthday last week: his 103rd, to be exact.

On Friday, residents and staff at the Shepherd of God Assisted Living facility gathered to celebrate the occasion, complete with a cake decorated with a mountain, as one of Larry’s great passions in life was hiking.

“He climbed Half Dome every year until he was 94,” said his son, who was visiting from Washington State.

Larry’s long life began in Pennsylvania in 1907, where he spent his youth. After graduating from Washington and Jefferson College with a teaching degree, he found his way west to Los Angeles, where he began a long career in education. Eventually, he moved to the Snelling and Merced areas of California, where he continued to teach and work as a school administrator.

Since his retirement in 1968, he has spent ample time travelling and enjoying the outdoors.

Crawford attributes his longevity to both good genes and a good diet, noting that his favorite food is spaghetti.
