In a field that included three four-year schools, College of the Siskiyous athletes turned in strong performances at the WildCat Relays Feb. 27 in Chico.
Myron Johnson won the long jump and triple jump and Ty Lang won the men’s 100 meter.
Stephen Dickinson was second in the 110 hurdles and third in the high jump; Donavon Cunningham was second in the discus; and Zach Stoner was third in the 400.
The Eagles’ 4 by 100 relay team of Jasen Meyers, Stoner, Johnson and Lang placed second in 42.82, behind Sacramento City College’s winning time of 41.28.
Siskiyous head coach Shannon Maas said the relay team’s effort was “the biggest surprise on the men’s side.” Even though their third handoff was “horrible,” according to Maas, the  Eagles had a better time than last year’s best. And it was better than the teams from Chico State, Humboldt State and Oregon Institute of Technology.
Maas said another highlight for the Eagles was the performance of Mount Shasta High School graduate Joanna Beem, who placed 5th in the 800 meter race in 2:31.53, the fastest time by any of the Golden Valley Conference runners.
Beem’s time was 6 seconds better than her high school best, Maas said, adding, “she competed well; she put everything she had into it.”
Myron Johnson won the long jump at 22.09.75 and had a personal best of 45-07.25 to win the triple jump, well ahead of second place finisher Derek Larman of Oregon Tech (43-03.25). “He looked good,” Maas said of Johnson, a sophomore from Portland, Ore.
Ty Lang ran in the fifth of five 100 meter heats and “basically had no competition,” according to Maas.
His team of 10.98 was better than Sacramento’s Lamont Beard, who finished second in 11.05. That placed him No. 2 this season among Northern California community college sprinters and not far off the current best NorCal time of 10.96.
Stephen Dickinson earned his second place in the 110 hurdles despite hitting some hurdles along the way. He finished in 15.46, behind Chico State’s Jake Nelson (15.13).
A freshman from Bonanza, Ore., Dickinson also tied for third in the high jump at 6-05.5 – the best jump by any GVC competitor – and he was 6th in the long jump at 21-06.25.
Sophomore Donavon Cunningham of Vancouver, Wash., was 2nd in the discus at 144-01 and 4th in the shot put at 44-09.
Zach Stoner, a sophomore from Yreka, was 3rd in the 400 meters at 49.69, behind two Sacramento City runners who finished in 47.7 and 49.61.
After trailing by two meters off the first turn, Maas said Stoner gained ground on race winner Brandon Dawson, who is ranked No. 1 in the state.
Also for the Eagles, Katie Anderson of Klamath Falls was 6th in women’s long jump at 16-05.75 and 6th in triple jump at 31-01.25; Royce Autry of Mount Shasta was 9th in the 100 in 11.68 and 14th in long jump at 19-10.75; and Jasen Meyers of Renton, Wash., was 9th in the 400 at 52.25.
The Eagles’ 4 by 400 team of Meyers, Lang, Dickinson and Stoner finished 6th in 3:29.71.
The Eagles are scheduled to compete this Saturday, March 6, in the Artie Sullivan Invitational in Ashland.
