Rick Deruyter had a unique perspective for the epic Buchanan Brothers battle at the 2010 Shasta Cascade League championships Feb. 6 in Burney.
“Although a tough match, Marcus’s previous experience at Sections and State really showed,” said Deruyter, who is their coach and father. “Marcus beat his brother by pin in the second round. The league Championships came to a stop to watch the battle. However, unlike most wrestling matches, the gym was silent, no one wanted to cheer, no one wanted to coach; it was a battle in pure silence. When Marcus had the opportunity to show extreme sportsmanship, he did, helping his brother up in a true form.
“As a coach and father of the two wrestlers, I was proud of how well they wrestled. They shook hands and gave big hugs.”
Marcus will go on to Divisions in the 130 pound weight class, while Matthew will move up to 135.
