A fire that was first reported on Saturday north of Highway 96 on the Klamath National Forest was estimated to be over 500 acres with no containment as of Sunday morning, Aug. 1.
The Dutch Fire was reported to the KNF dispatch center in Yreka at approximately 4:20 p.m., according to a news release from the Forest. A large column of smoke was visible for miles.
Air tankers and helicopters dropped water and fire retardant at the head of the fire Saturday, as it burned uphill at a high rate of spread.
No residential evacuations were in effect as of Saturday evening, but plans were being made in case the fire changes direction or threatens any structure.
Fire fighting resources were being mobilized in efforts to contain the fire, which is burning in steep and rugged terrain with poor access.
The Dutch Fire is located approximately five miles northeast of the Klamath River between Dutch and Empire Creeks and north of State Highway 96.
