The 2010 high school football season began with a pair of losses for southern Siskiyou County teams Friday night, Aug. 27.
The Weed Cougars, playing the entire second half with just 11 players, lost to the visiting Etna Lions, 40-27.
Mount Shasta High School lost at Modoc in Alturas, 39-24.
The JV Bears and JV Cougars also lost. Weed's JV team played Etna to an 0-0 tie until the Lions scored on a safety with 3:19 to play in the game and went on to win it, 2-0.
Weed's varsity, which started the game with 13 players, lost two to injury in the first half but still held a 14-12 lead at the intermission.
The Cougars, in a spread offense that featured quarterback Jake West and receivers Cody Beam and Liam Hagarty, scored their two first half touchdowns on short runs by fullback Mykeil White.
They scored their two second half touchdowns on passes from West to Beam, one for 69 yards, the other for 15.
