Dunsmuir High School is preparing to host the Shasta Cascade League wrestling Championships this Friday and Saturday, and Tiger coach Robert Wallace said it wouldn’t be possible without community support.

This is the first time Dunsmuir has hosted a full wrestling tournament, Wallace said.

Teams from Chester, Modoc, Etna, Tulelake, Big Valley, Fall River, and Burney will join the Tigers for the two-day competition that will decide small school and large school league champions and which wrestlers advance to the Division tournament.

At the end of Fridays duals, which start at 1 p.m., the winning large and small schools will be awarded plaques.

Saturday’s double elimination individual tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Based on the tournament results, each team can qualify one competitor in each weight class to move on to the Division tournament.

Saturday’s winning teams will again receive plaques, and a Team Sportsmanship award will be presented.

Wallace said there’s much to organize to get ready for the tournament, including coordinating volunteers and securing a second mat from Burney that will allow two matches to happen at the same time in the small DHS gym.

He said the effort is being well supported by businesses in town and in Mount Shasta.
“It’s a group effort,” Wallace said. “Without volunteers and donations, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”
