James ”Hobie” Bailey passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the age of 67 at his home in McCloud, CA with family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was a lifelong resident of McCloud, born to Jefferson and Elizabeth Bailey on May 31, 1949. He was the middle of three boys.
Hobie met the love of his life, Neva Bailey and they were married on February 27, 1971. In June of 1978, they welcomed their baby daughter, Sarah Elizabeth who was his pride and joy. They formed a father, daughter bond never to be broken. When she was younger, he could be found throwing a softball with her in the back yard or at the park, where he coached her team.
Hobie proudly played sports for the McCloud Logger football, basketball and baseball teams and lettered in all of them. He went to work for Champion Lumber Mill in 1967 as soon as he graduated from high school and became skilled at many jobs, working his way up to steam rig sawyer, and in 1981 was sent to Racine, WI to learn to run the computerized head rig when P & M Cedar Products bought the mill. In 2004 he went to work for Roseburg Forest Products as a woods patrolman, which was one of his favorite jobs. He retired in 2011.
Hobie loved sports and often would attend the local high school and college games encouraging the local teams. He loved hunting and fishing and he also was quite a story teller and loved laughing and telling stories with his friends.
An avid golfer, he was a life time member of McCloud Golf Course. He served on the board of directors for many years, and on Thursdays and weekends, you could find him on the golf course with the gang.
He was a member of the NRA, and helped run the chains for the COS football teams for over 40 years.
Anyone who knew Hobie loved him, and the feeling was mutual. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved his dog, Rowdy, who misses him dearly, and he loved riding his Harley Davidson. He was a lover of horses and spent many days riding his horse, Rocket Man. He had a genuinely huge smile for all he passed and the biggest wave you could ever imagine. He had a heart of gold, and the small mountain town of McCloud will not be the same without him.
Hobie was preceded in death by his father Jefferson Bailey and his mother Elizabeth Bailey. He leaves behind his wife, of 46 years, Neva, his daughter Sarah Boneham and son in law John, his two grandchildren, Kyra and Cody all of Reno, NV., his older brother, Jefferson Bailey (Connie) of Redding, CA and his younger brother, Richard Bailey (Melinda) of Roseburg OR., sister in law, Geraldine Lobis, brothers in law Jim Poloni (Jennifer), Steve Poloni (Jill) along with many loved nieces and nephews.
Services for Hobie will be held on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 11:00 am. at the Catholic Church in McCloud with a reception to follow at the hall next door.
In lieu of flowers, Hobie asked that donations be made to St. Jude Research Hospital or to Siskiyou Humane Society.
