Mary Scott Philp passed away peacefully at home on June 14, 2017 after a short illness. She was born in the coastal village of West Wemyss, Scotland on February 19, 1930, the fifth of eight children born to William and Mary Adams. She married her husband Thomas Philp on October 7, 1950 and they were together for 55 years until his death in 2005.
They immigrated to Siskiyou County with their two small children in 1957. Except for a few years in Redding after Mary retired from Mercy Medical Center, they lived in McCloud and Mt. Shasta. After her husband’s death Mary returned to Mt. Shasta and reconnected with many friends and neighbors.
The greatest joys in her life were her grandchildren and in recent years, she especially enjoyed the visits from her great-grandchildren. She loved to travel, either for a day or for a month, especially to visit family near and far.
Mary was proud of her nearly 70 years of membership in the Order of Eastern Star, a Masonic organization in which her parents and most siblings were also members. Known as Aunt Mary in the Masonic family, she was active in both the local Fidelity Chapter and the Aloha Chapter in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She also served the Grand Chapter of California in several positions over the years and was always ready to assist other chapters throughout Northern California.
Mary is survived by one brother, Michael (and Judy) Adams of Sun City, Arizona, her daughter, Kathleen (and Bill) Suvia of Mount Shasta and her son, Thomas, Jr. of Reno, Nevada. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Kelly Philp, Colin (and Savannah) Suvia, Mike (and Leona) Suvia, and her great-grandchildren: Amanda, Blake, Connor and Brooklyn Suvia. Aunt Mary was also well loved by many nieces and nephews in the U.S., Canada, England and Scotland.
At the family’s request there will be no services. The family would like to express appreciation to the team at Mercy Mt. Shasta Hospice and suggests a donation to that organization for those wishing to make a memorial contribution.
