January 11, 1925-July 26, 2017
Ed Silva (92) passed away at home after a tough battle with pneumonia and cancer. Born in Acushnet, Mass. in 1925, he joined the Navy at the age of 17 to support the country’s war efforts during WWII. Shortly after the war, he moved with his family to California where he joined the San Jose Fire Department. He served for 27 years and rose to the rank of Captain. In 1967, while on a fishing trip to Lake Dwinell, he met Nola Hemby Alexander, a waitress at the HI-LO Cafe that sold him night crawlers. The two married in 1968 and made their home in Santa Clara, CA until his retirement in 1973 when they moved back to Weed.
They purchased the Breakfast House in downtown Mt. Shasta prior to building Silva’s Restaurant in Weed, which they owned and operated for thirty years before selling the business to enter retirement in 2006. Silva’s Restaurant was an asset to the community, not only providing hundreds of jobs over the years but as a supporter of the community by donating goods, services and activities to local charities, and providing facilities for meetings, weddings and other celebrations.
Ed was a member of the Rotary Club and served as a Past President. He was also a member of the Berean Church and the Weed Golf Club.
On July 20, 2017, Ed was honored by the Siskiyou County Veterans Services Offices and given a Certificate of Appreciation for his naval service and presented with replacement medals for those lost in the devastation of the Boles fire, almost three years ago.
He is survived by daughters Cindy (John) Schultz of San Jose CA, Brenda (Joe) Alexander-Sedin of Weed CA, Glenda (Sol) Ameen of Mt. Shasta CA, brother Raymond of Olympia WA, grandchildren Mellissa Greene Taylor-Brophy (Pat) of Suffolk VA, David Wall of Weed CA, Garrett Greene of Sacramento CA, Cristin Schultz Harryman (Rob) of Mt. Shasta CA, Kelly Schultz (fiancé Mike Saad) of San Jose CA, Joe Ameen of Merced CA and 10 great-grandchildren.
