Shirley Turner Dettman, a longtime resident of Mount Shasta, California, died peacefully at her hone on September 11, 2017 surrounded by her family.
Shirley was born in 1922 in McCloud, California to Martha Jane “Jenny” and George Turner. She was the younger of two children. She attended school in McCloud.
Shirley married Jonathan Dettman in 1938 in Gridley, California. They were married for 70 wonderful years. They lived in Gridley for a short time and then moved to McArthur, California where their two sons, Norman and Gene, were born.
Johnathan was a timberfaller and they lived in logging camps in Whitehorse, Pondosa and Tennant, before building their home and settling in Mount Shasta in 1949.
Shirley was a mother and homemaker. She loved to bake and tend her garden. She was always baking fresh bread, pies, cakes and preserving the fruits of her labor from the garden. She won many ribbons at the county fair over the years.
She was in the Ground Observer Corps in the ’50s; and was a Cub Scout leader for several years and active in her church.
She was a lifelong member of Hope Community Church and loved to supply the church with fresh flowers from her garden. She served as treasurer and bookkeeper for many years. She was a woman of strong faith and attended church and Bible study throughout her life.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jonathan; and her sister, Juanita Boyer.
She is survived by her sons, Norman (Karen) Dettman, and Gene (Wilma) Dettman; seven grandchildren: Donna (Rick) Hunting, Beth (Mike) DellaBona, Kimberly (Roman) Bojorquez, Terry (Diane) Ferguson, Tamie (Steve) Watkinds, Eran (Geno) Peruzzin, and Bridget (Jimmy) Smith; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, September 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Hope Community Church.
