Ernest Marion Wheeler, Jr., born on January 15, 1924 in Los Angeles, California, passed away at the Madrone Hospice House in Yreka, California on September 17, 2017. He was 93 years old.

Ernie moved to Dunsmuir, California with his parents as an infant and was a lifelong resident.

He was a veteran who served in the US Army in New Guinea during World War II. He returned to Dunsmuir after the war and worked as a civil engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad for over 30 years.

Ernie was a founding member of the Dunsmuir Rod and Gun Club and had a lifelong passion for hunting, fishing and traveling. He was an expert trap shooter who continued competing until he was 91 years old.

His world travels took him to China, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Europe and South America. He was often described as “the ultimate old-style gentleman.”

Ernie was preceded in death by his sister, Mae Aileen Linebarger. Her two sons are Bruce Lee Linebarger of Mount Shasta, California and Dale Edward Linebarger of Sweetbriar, California.
