Margaret Palmer, age 88, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Shasta View Nursing Center in Weed, CA. She finally succumbed to a long, courageous battle with chronic COPD. She had been a 40-year resident and active volunteer in the town of Mt. Shasta, CA, and surrounding communities.

Margaret was born in Los Angeles during the Great Depression, and was the youngest of three children. At an early age, she was pressed into paid work to help support her family, which included turning down a scholarship for nursing school when her father died during her teenage years.

She married Bill Saunders in 1957 and had a son. She was divorced in 1960, and subsequently worked for many years in Los Angeles as an executive secretary for banks, while raising her son as a single parent. In the mid 1960’s she found the love of her life, Kenny Coats. They enjoyed a wonderful, beautiful relationship until he was killed at sea as a merchant marine. In the mid-70’s she married Dean Palmer, and moved to Rogue River, Oregon. By the late 70’s, she and Dean moved to Mt. Shasta, where she worked as a teller at local banks and devoted herself to volunteering. She and Dean were divorced in the late 90’s, and she lived happily alone in her house on Rockfellow Drive ever since.

She was fiercely devoted to her son and his family. Several times a year she would make the trek to the Bay Area (with her cat) to help with the birth of her granddaughters, to attend milestone events, and to simply stay current with those she loved. She was also a true, dedicated friend to many in Mt Shasta and around the country. For more than 45 years, she also served as Conservator and lone life-line for her niece who had been hit by a truck and rendered severely disabled.

Mt. Shasta was the place she felt most at home. Always caring for others, Marge was very active as a board member at Friends of the Library, a friendly presence volunteering at Paws & Shop, and for years, serving those less fortunate via Grandparents Anonymous.

Marge is survived by her son, Mitch Saunders; her granddaughters, Megan and Briana, her former daughter-in-law, Cindy Saunders, her niece under conservatorship, Carol Woodward, and her hanai sister and her husband, Carmy and Allen Nelson. She is also survived by two sets of nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of life for Marge on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 11:00am. More details will be available by contacting Evelyn Callas, MD at 530-925-1129 or ecallas@snowcrest.net.

In lieu of flowers, Marge asked that donations be made in her name to Paws and Shop or Friends of the Library, in Mt. Shasta, CA.
