Velma Pemberton passed away at home surrounded by her family on July 5, 2018. She was 100 years old.
Born and raised in South Dakota with her six siblings, she attended nursing school in Minnesota and Oregon. She worked as a nurse in Weed for a brief period in 1941, returning in 1948, where she met and married her husband, Thomas Pemberton, a teacher.
They were married from 1948 until 1976, and had three children, Patricia (Charlie), Thomas (Kathy), and John (Jennifer.) Her nursing career spanned over 45 years in surgical, clinical and caregiving.
She was an excellent homemaker, who loved to bake and cook. She could make a pie in 15 minutes! She enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables. Her enjoyment of table games/cards was the result of her ability to “always win.”
She is survived by her three children; five grandchildren and their spouses; and six great-grandchildren; as well as two brothers and one sister.
She was preceded in death by three of her brothers.
A member of the First Lutheran Church in Dunsmuir and the Weed Berean Church, her many interests included gardening, reading, knitting, hiking, and fishing. She enjoyed the Minnesota Vikings, and followed professional golf. She loved her kitty Scamper, and planting trees.
She will be remembered for her strength and determination, and her love of life.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. at the Weed Berean Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Weed Berean Church, Mercy Hospice, and Mercy Medical Center.
