(Shirl) Ray Monson, age 93, of Weed California, passed peacefully surrounded by family, on November 6, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center, Mount Shasta, due to complications resulting from a stroke.
Ray retired to Lake Shastina with his wife Carole, after 30 years as an administrator with the Novato Unified School District. He then became involved with the Homeowners Association and later served as president. Ray was an accomplished jazz musician and played the saxophone and clarinet with the Walt Tolleson Musical Organization in the San Francisco Bay area for many years.
Ray maintained and cherished lifelong relationships with his many friends. He was an avid reader and he and Carole enjoyed bird watching. Ray taught himself how to play the piano and enjoyed playing all the standards. He could often be found listening to his favorite musical artists. He was passionate about Frank Sinatra’s musical prowess and would look forward to “Sinatra hour,” in the evenings. Ray treasured time spent with his family and friends. One could always look forward to deliciously prepared dinners, wonderful conversations, good advice, great stories, listening to swing music, and sitting on his deck in the evenings to watch the sun set and to gaze at the stars in nighttime sky. To this Ray would remark, “Carole and I have lived a charmed life.”
His wife Carole Monson preceded him in death in 1995. They are survived by his son Ray (Wanda) grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick (Nancy) Sarah, Leah, two great-grandchildren Raelynn and Emmett and his extended family Ruth Ann Russell, Jim and Joe Lusk and their families.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at Lake Shastina, August 10th, 2018 to honor a most remarkable man, patriarch, mentor, beloved by his family and friends and admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers you may make a donation to your favorite charity in Ray’s name.
