Raymond John Marin of Mt. Shasta passed away on July 24, 2018 after a three-year battle with pneumonia. He was 87 years old. Ray was born in Dunsmuir on August 28, 1930 and lived his entire life in Siskiyou county. He was a simple man who led a simple life. An all-star basketball player for Dunsmuir High School, he once scored 57 points against the Weed Cougars in 1949. The final score of that game, Dunsmuir 78, Weed 21. His athletic abilities gained him notoriety from several colleges offering partial scholarships. Being born to immigrant parents, working for the railroad, the family could not afford to pay for the remaining costs of college, so Ray hung up his basketball sneakers and went to work for the U.S. Plywood Lumber Company in McCloud. Ray worked in the saw mill department for 30 years and was known by his coworkers as a very friendly, knowledgeable, hard worker. They nicknamed him “Slim”. When the McCloud mill closed its doors, Ray went to work for P&M Cedar at Cooper’s mill in Mt. Shasta for ten years. He retired in 1988 and enjoyed woodworking and venturing into the forest to cut firewood and hunt mushrooms.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen of 65 years and sons, Dennis and Steve (Angie). He was preceded in death by son, Gary, in 1964. Ray also leaves behind grandchildren, Andrew, Erin, Audrey, and Carson, as well as twin great granddaughters, Kaylee and Alye.

A memorial service will be held for Ray on August 4, 2018 at 11 am at the Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel on the grounds of the Mt. Shasta cemetery. A reception following in his favorite backyard at his home: 114 North A Street, Mt. Shasta. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Mt. Shasta Hospice Program.
