Richard Edgerton Below was born in Isleton, CA on February 3, 1927 and passed away in Spokane, WA on October 7, 2018 at age 91. Born to Margaret Edgerton and Richard Skelton Below, Richard grew up in Oakland CA and went to Castlemont High School. He left school during his sophomore year and entered the US Merchant Marine during WW2, serving primarily in the South Pacific. He continued to work as a Merchant Seaman following the war, traveling throughout the world until he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. He spent approximately one year in Korea working as a telephone lineman. Following his discharge he moved to the Redding, CA area where he met and married, Patricia Smith. They moved to Dunsmuir CA and raised four children. Richard worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, eventually becoming a locomotive Engineer for many years.
A long time Mason, Shriner, Eagle and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; he was a gregarious person who loved to interact with family, friends and people in general.
Following retirement he continued to live in Dunsmuir and more recently moved to Spokane, WA to be near his daughter, Heidi Cole (Kurt). In addition to his daughter he is survived by his former wife, Patty Huntrods and their sons; Louis (Shirley), Dennis and Mitchell, plus grandchildren Michelle, Garrett, Aaron, Brandon, Amy and great granddaughter, Reese. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy Louise Hutchinson, his second wife Carolyn and grandson Russell. He is survived by his brother, Louis Reed Below (Pat).
