A glorious sunset has marked the end of a long, challenging journey.
Longtime Dunsmuir resident, Reva Coon, passed away on February 5, 2009 at the Mercy Care Center in Mount Shasta at the age of 104.
Reva was born Reva Patrick on July 30, 1904 in Seattle, Washington. Reva grew up in Oakland, California where she graduated from high school with honors. She continued her schooling at the University of California.
After graduation and a fifth year of teacher training, Reva took a job teaching at Dunsmuir High School. All of her life she remained a supporter of the University and the Cal Bears.
Reva will be remembered as a beloved English, music and drama teacher at Dunsmuir High School. She was an accomplished violinist and often played at weddings and other social events.
Reva directed the Mother Singers and she also was the director of the Methodist Church Choir for over 35 years. She founded the interdenominational Christmas program which continues to this day.
Reva directed the Community Theater and the Summer Playhouse which performed in the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens.
After 35 years of teaching, Reva retired and soon became a community activist. Among other things, she was chairman of the Dunsmuir Centennial Celebration.
Since the age of 90 she has published three books and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
During her later years Reva became adventuresome. For her 90th birthday she flew in a glider. After her 90th birthday she learned to swim. It was during her late years that she traveled to many Elderhostels.
Reva was preceded in death by her husband, Burton; her daughter, Barbara Murphy; her grandchildren, Cindy Demming, Elizabeth Eachus and Carl Eachus.
She is survived by her son and wife, Robert and Nancy Coon; her daughter, Alice-Jane; her grandchildren, Tom Eachus, Susan Johnson, Sean and Andy Coon; her great-grandchildren, Tommy Eachus, Joe Eachus, Terry Stephens, Katie Eachus, John Biswell, Kelly Halliday, Jennifer Freehill, Phillip Johnson, Evan Johnson; and her great-great-grandchildren, Aila Freehill, Morgan Freehill and Anika Biswell.

A musical memorial will be held in Reva’s honor at a later date.
