Kenneth Wilson Beatty, PhD, a resident of Weed and longtime life science teacher and Professor Emeritus at College of the Siskiyous, died at his home after a short battle with cancer on February 2, 2010. He was 80 years old.
Kenneth was born February 22, 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to the late Lillian Beatty Henrics and Cleo Orville Beatty.
Dr. Beatty moved to California from Lawton, Oklahoma as a young man, and attended the University of California at Davis.
He started teaching in September 1960 at College of the Siskiyous. He received his PhD in zoology in December 1968, becoming the first instructor at the college to receive their doctorate.
Dr. Beatty taught at COS for his entire career until his retirement in 1994. He continued to teach until a few months before his death.
One of Kenneth’s biggest joys in life was teaching students and sharing everything he found unique and amazing. He also loved traveling.
Kenneth used photography to teach his children to slow down and smell the flowers. Dr. Beatty loved shooting ordinary but beautiful things. He used his gentle voice to encourage his children on a path of self-discovery, teaching them to discover and grow.
Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife, Leona Kegg Beatty; children, Laurel and her husband Chet Dickenson, Jeffrey and his wife Tina, daughter Dana Beatty; and by his stepchildren, Duane Kegg and his wife Debbie and Lisa Kegg, and his first wife Elaine Beatty Callis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Kira.
Kenneth especially enjoyed springtime, so a celebration of his life will be held Saturday, April 24 at College of the Siskiyous in the Life Science Room 3 at 11 a.m., with a potluck to follow. The public is welcome to attend.
