Hal Bowman, 88, of Dunsmuir, passed away June 1, 2009. Hal was born April 3, 1921 in San Francisco, California.
He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1943 with a Bachelors degree in forestry, and was registered professional forester #20.
He worked for Castle Creek Lumber, Ralph L. Smith Lumber, and Kimberly Clark, retiring in 1980 to establish a consulting forestry business which he operated until shortly before his death. Sustainable forestry was his passion.
Hal is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mardell (Packwood); sons, Forest (Ruth) and Brook (Maura); daughter, Fawn Turner (Jonathan); grandchildren, Mark (Jillian), Christopher (Amy), Nathanael, Christine, Erich, Jerry Turner and Serenity Turner; great-grandchildren Jacob and Muriel.
Hal served in the US Army (Philippines) during World War II.
Hal served his Lord and Savior as a member of the church of Christ as elder, treasurer, song leader, Bible and music teacher, youth leader, camp cook, counselor, chaperone. He was a great example of a Christian father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Hal served his profession and community, including PCT Advisory council, Society of American Foresters, International Disaster Emergency Services, Siskiyou Planning Commission, Dunsmuir treasurer, California Forest Landowners Association, American Tree Farm System inspector and COS Community choir.
Hal enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping and backpacking with his family. Many memorable weeks were spent in wilderness areas.
At age 87, Hal spent a week backpacking in the John Muir wilderness area, walking 10 miles from the camp site to the trailhead.
Hal’s enthusiasm for life was an inspiration to many.
A celebration of Hal’s life is planned for this Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m. at the Dunsmuir Church of Christ. Please notify Brook Bowman (qualicon@juno.com or 650-291-3614) if you will attend.
