Richard Lee Beasley, a longtime resident of Weed, went to be with his Lord in the afternoon of July 11, 2008.
Richard was born in Hollywood, California on December 8, 1929 to Major and Joy Beasley. He was the oldest of five children.
At the age of 12, one year and a day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, his father arranged for him to work at the ranch of Hollywood producer Louis B. Mayer. It was here that Richard grew to love horses.
Not allowed to watch movies as a child, he often unknowingly, saddled horses for Hollywood stars. He learned his thoroughbred horse racing skills at the Mayer Ranch.
His professional horse racing career began in 1946 and continued into the early 1960s.
Well known throughout California for his horse racing skills during his career, he rode for legendary owners such as Charles Howard, owner of Seabiscuit.
Upon his retirement as a professional jockey, Richard undertook various horse racing related jobs, eventually settling into a position as valet and shop steward until his retirement.
He enjoyed mentoring young jockeys as he shared his own experiences in the saddle.
Richard retired in 1989 to his beloved Drift Fence Ranch in Weed where he would live out his dream of living in the beautiful California mountains with a few horses and many visiting friends.
Richard was the proud father of seven children, Rick, Randy, Kim, Kelly, Kevin, Brian and Tara; and 13 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 26 at the Lake Shastina Community Bible Church with Pastor Nick Toroni officiating.
