With a 60-49 victory in Burney Friday night, the Weed High School boys basketball team clinched at least a share of the 2010 Shasta Cascade League championship.
The league title is Weed’s first since 1989.
Tanner Shelton scored 18 points to lead the Cougars, who improved their SCL record to 9-2 with just one game remaining in the regular season.
Robert Gonzales scored 15, Robert West 10, Jake West 9, Liam Hagarty 6 and Carlos Nava 2.
Weed also defeated Modoc Tuesday night in Weed, 57-49, to finish the week 19-5 overall, the best record among all Northern Section Division 5 teams.
Shelton made 5 of his 8 field goal attempts in the Burney game, including 3 of 5 three-point shots. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Gonzales led the Cougars with 9 rebounds, while Robert West and Jake West had 8 boards each.
Jake West added 7 assists and 4 steals.
Against Modoc, Jake West scored a season-high 20 points on 7 for 11 shooting. He made 3 of 5 three-point tries and led the Cougars with 9 rebounds and 5 steals.
Brandon Ede also made 3 three-pointers and finished with 11 points against Modoc, while Robert West scored 11, Shelton 6, Gonzales 6 and Hagarty 3.
The Cougars are scheduled to finish the regular season at home against Mount Shasta this coming Friday, Feb. 19.
Mount Shasta (7-3) finished the week one game behind the Cougars in the loss column to keep its hopes alive for a share of the SCL title. The Bears would need to defeat Trinity Tuesday night in Mount Shasta and win at Weed to tie the Cougars for first place.
The Cougars nipped the Bears in Mount Shasta in late January, 48-47.
