Dunsmuir Elementary took second place in the “A” team bracket at the Weed Elementary School Basketball Tournament the weekend of Jan. 15-16, 2010, while Butteville’s Eagles won the “B” team championship.
Host Weed placed third in the “A” bracket in the annual event that raises funds for the WES eighth grade end of school year trip.
Dunsmuir won a thriller over Weed Saturday morning, 29-26, after a three-point shot by Carlos Sanchez went partway in then popped out of the basket.
It was Weed’s first loss in two years, but they came back strong to win later in the day and place third.
Despite a rally and a 32-point effort by seventh grader John Clemens, Dunsmuir lost the championship game to a Burney team that had too much size in the post.
Burney won its opener over Sisson 42-40 in overtime.
Butteville defeated Fall River in the “B” championship game Saturday night.
“It was a great tournament,” said Weed coach Jack Leiffer. “The stands were packed for most of the games. We get compliments every year on our hospitality room, and everybody looks forward to coming back.”
In the cheerleading competition, Yreka placed first, Sisson second and Dunsmuir third.
