Mount Shasta High School’s girls basketball team is one win away from adding another league championship emblem to its banner in Robert E. Novo Gymnasium.
The Bears sprinted past Trinity, 69-39, in their final regular season home game Tuesday night, Feb. 16, and moved into a three-way first place tie in the Shasta Cascade League with Etna and Fall River, all with 9-2 records.
The Bears need a win at Weed in their regular season finale Friday night to claim a share of the 2010 SCL title.
Head coach Danny Hansen said they aren’t expecting that victory to come easy.
At the start of the season Hansen said he wanted the final game at Weed to be meaningful and he wanted to play Weed with both teams at full strength.
It appears he’ll get his wish. The Bears have won 9 of their last 10 games since losing the league opener at Fall River.
Weed, after struggling for much of the season to keep players on the court, has won 3 of its last 4 to move into fourth place with a 5-6 league record.
“It’s going to be tough; that’s what I want,” Hansen said of Friday’s game. Last year, the Cougars defeated the Bears in the final regular season game, leaving Mount Shasta in a tie for second place, two games behind Etna. The Bears then lost their first round playoff game at Sutter, 39-37.
The Bears have defeated Weed twice this season, 38-27 in Mount Shasta on Jan. 26 and 48-29 at the Yreka tournament in early December.
Seniors on this year’s Mount Shasta roster – Taylor Hansen, Jeana Michels, Amanda Amesbury, Athena Oreck, Kendra Woodglass and Rachel Abbott – were recognized with their parents before Tuesday night’s game against Trinity (2-9).
The Wolves opened the game using a box-and-one defense on Taylor Hansen, who had scored 16 points when Mount Shasta won at Trinity Feb. 10.
“I said, ‘go ahead,’” Danny Hansen said after the game. “I’ve got a lot of other girls who can score. We’re doing a lot of good things right now.”
By putting 69 points on the board, the Bears had their highest scoring game of the season, even though they only made one three-point shot.
Michels led the way with 18 points, many of them on drives to the basket. Amesbury scored 14 and freshman Janelle Jaegel 12.
Taylor Hansen scored 8, junior Kismet Prosper 6, Abbott 4, junior Tori Weatherford 3, Oreck 2 and Woodglass 2.
“We’re consistently holding teams under 40 points and we’re sharing the ball very well on offense,” Hansen said. “The girls are willing to work. They want to end their senior year the right way.”
Hansen said Woodglass’s return from an injury adds to the team’s depth inside.
The roster also now includes sophomore Jeanette Ricci, who has been brought up from the JV team.
