Jim Mathews, age 86, will remember his May 2, 2017 round of golf for a long time. Mathews made the first hole-in-one of his golfing career on the par 3 13th hole of the Lake Shastina Golf Resort that day.

He hit the shot with his driver during the regular golf day of the Mt. Shasta Branch of Sons in Retirement (SIR).

Mathews said he didn't see his ball fall in the hole and only learned that he made the hole-in-one when his playing partners told him.

His foursome included: Randy Furry of Mount Shasta, Dale Zeigler of Mount Shasta and Bud Rogers of Shingletown.

Mathews finished the round with one his lowest scores in 21 years of golfing and, adhering to the time honored tradition of celebrating such a feat, he bought drinks for all afterward.
