Cool, clear weather greeted participants in the 2017 Dunsmuir River Run on Saturday morning, June 10.

One of many events held during Railroad Days, the River Run begins and ends in downtown Dunsmuir.

Runners were reminded before the race that Railroad Days celebrates Dunsmuir’s history as a railroad center and passing trains can be expected at any time. Runners were delayed for about 1 ½ minutes about a half mile into the race when they encountered a train crossing the course, according to Dusty Miller of Siskiyou Runners.

Overall winners in the 2-mile race were Valarie Wiley of Yreka (19:00) and Butch Stratton of Redding (19:02).

In the 5-mile race, John Luaces and Karen Sinderson, both of Redding, finished first and second overall in the 5-mile race. Their finish times were 34:28 and 36:22, respectively.

Overall male and female winners in both races received handcrafted locomotive trophies provided by CAL FIRE’s Deadwood Conservation Camp.
