The 2017 high school football season started on a high note for two south county teams Friday night. Six different Weed Cougars scored touchdowns in a 70-8 victory at Dunsmuir, while the Mount Shasta JV Bears won big at Yreka, 44-0.

The varsity Bears scored their only touchdown in a 28-7 loss at Yreka on a 37 yard pass from Gage Kinkade to Trenton Merrill early in the second quarter. A PAT kick by Joe Summers tied the score at 7-7.

Junior running back Lennoux Guzman scored three touchdowns for the Cougars, while sophomore quarterback Alex Guzman and sophomore Rob Berg scored two touchdowns each. Senior Harley Williams reached pay dirt, as did Cougar seniors Chris Brigham and Bill Bedzyk, who both returned fumbles for touchdowns.

Dunsmuir got a glimpse of its future possibilities when sophomore Larry Baker returned a kickoff for a touchdown and junior quarterback Kyle Jones ran in the two-point conversion.
