On Wednesday night, the Burroughs High School varsity wrestling team had its last home match of the 2018-19 season at the Burroughs Barn in front of a packed house.

Although Burroughs lost the match as a team on senior night, there were still some bright spots.

Against a good Hesperia squad, the Burroughs was able to win two matches: 170-pound sophomore Chase Flerchinger won via decision after a very competitive three-period match with Hesperia’s Nicholas Zepeda.

In the next match following Flerchinger, 182-pound senior Kaleb Williams had himself a senior night to remember when he pinned Hesperia’s Javier Verdugo in the first period.

Burroughs wrestling head coach Michael Lazaro wished his wrestlers came out with much more intensity on the night and noted that there needs to be significant improvement across the board with conditioning before the Mojave River League finals at Sultana High School at the end of the month.

The Burros will next take part in the Santa Ynez tournament this upcoming Friday and Saturday, while their next MRL match will be on the road next Wednesday night against Oak Hills High School at 6 p.m.
