A busy south county sports weekend ended with a collective groan in College of the Siskiyous’ Screamin Eagle Gymnasium Saturday night in Weed as the host team landed on the short end of a 77-76 final score.
Siskiyous’ men fought back from a 10-point deficit in the final minutes and had two shots at the victory in the closing seconds.
A large crowd screamed, screeched and turned the bleachers into a thunder machine in the closing minutes as the Eagles rallied.
Earlier in the evening, the COS women pulled away from Butte down the stretch for an 82-67 victory that improved their Golden Valley Conference record to 2-0.
Also on Saturday in Weed, Dunsmuir Elementary School’s “A” team played Burney for the championship in the WES boys basketball tournament, while Butteville’s Eagles faced Fall River in the “B” team title game. 
On Friday night, Dunsmuir’s girls opened Evergreen League play with a thrilling home court win over Big Valley on Katie McIntyre’s game-winning shot with no time left on the clock.
The Tiger boys lost to the Cardinals, 57-48.
Mount Shasta High School’s varsity teams swept Burney in Mount Shasta Friday night, while the Weed Cougars were sweeping Modoc in Alturas.
Weed’s boys team improved to 13-2 and 4-0 in the Shasta Cascade League with a 57-28 win over Modoc.
The Cougar girls won, 43-34, to improve their SCL record to 2-2.
Mount Shasta’s boys and girls both finished the week 3-1 in SCL play, both one game out of first place.
The Bear girls downed Burney, 57-32, while the boys won 60-38.
