Tess Weathers became the second Mount Shasta High School graduate in the past two years to win the national championship in snowboard giant slalom during the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association’s championship race held in Winter Park, Colorado this past week.
Tess, a 2002 graduate of Mt. Shasta High School, is currently attending the University of California at Davis, where she is a graduate student in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
By winning the national title, she followed in the path of MSHS grad Rebecca Geries, who took first place a year ago as a member of the now-defunct College of the Siskiyous racing team.
“It was a ton of fun,” Tess said of her victory in a race that featured 38 women from across the country. The second place finisher was a racer from Sierra Nevada College who Tess competed against during the regular season, beating her twice and losing to her twice.
“It’s fun when you race someone close to you, then get to nationals and both finish at the top,” Tess said.
Now Tess said she’s looking forward to racing in the USASA nationals, which she expects to be even more competitive.
Tess’ brother Casey, a 2005 graduate of Mt. Shasta High, placed sixth in the USCSA men’s snowboard giant slalom championship race. Casey is attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he is a Materials Engineering major. Both siblings were the 2009 USCSA far west regional champions in giant slalom.
Their father, Dennis Weathers, a former coach for both MSHS and COS, is also racing on the USASA circuit this winter and has won five the six age bracket events he has competed in.
