After last weekend’s NSCIF Division III/IV Wrestling Championships in Tulelake, Weed’s Tyler Moser (121) and Jace Wright (132) will be advancing to sectionals.
“Tyler lost by pin in the finals, but his overall performance was strong and consistant,” said coach Rick Marshall. “He tends to wrestle more conservatively against kids he does not know, which was the case with his opponent, Levi Thomasson of Trinity.”
Marshall said that after having some time to think about his performance, Moser told him that he was confident he could beat Thomasson the next time around.
Jace Wright (132) had a good day, too, taking third in his weight class. “Jace beat a Trinity kid pretty handily by a pin,” said Marshall. “He wrestled really well, especially considering that he was in a heavier weight class (than he normally is).”
Though the team’s two other wrestlers, JD Machado and Gregg Holguin, went 0-2 for the day, Marshall was pleased with their overall effort. “JD has three more years to go (and shows much promise),” said Marshall.
Speaking about Holguin, Marshall said, “Gregg is one of our hardest workers.”
The Cougars will travel to Redding for the Northern Section Masters Championships this Friday and Saturday. The tournament will be held at the Redding Convention Center.
