Weed High School’s varsity basketball teams both went to overtime at Etna Tuesday night, Jan. 12, with opposite results – the boys won 67-62; the girls lost 54-48.
Mount Shasta High School’s boys and girls teams faced little resistance in their home victories against Modoc Tuesday night. The girls won 59-18; the boys won 80-15.

The Dunsmuir Tigers concluded their preseason schedule with home court losses to Mercy.
Sophomore Jake Mekeel had a team-high 9 points in the Tiger boys’ 65-44 defeat, while Zack Shirley scored 8.
Jamie Kirch led the Tiger girls with 12 points in a 56-16 loss.
The Tigers are scheduled to open league play Friday night at home against Big Valley.

The Weed boys rallied after falling behind by 13 points in the third quarter at Etna.
Jake West came off a pick and drove for a lay-in with 6 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 58-58.
Tanner Shelton hit his sixth three-pointer of the game with 9 seconds to play in overtime to put the game out of reach.
Shelton finished with 21 points, Jake West 12, Robert West 12 and Robert Gonzales 11. Jake West had a team-high 9 rebounds.
The Cougars take a Shasta Cascade League leading 3-0 record into Friday night’s game at Modoc (0-2).
The Weed girls nearly pulled off an upset at Etna, where Cougar senior Amanda Greene returned from a preseason injury to score 17 points and grab 8 rebounds.
Sierra Skeen had 10 points and 8 rebounds, Nicolette Neel 9 points and 8 rebounds and Kera Vogel 6 points and 8 rebounds.

Mount Shasta’s girls and boys teams both improved to 2-1 in SCL with Tuesday night’s wins.
Taylor Hansen and Amanda Amesbury scored 11 points each for the Mount Shasta girls, Jeana Michels 9 and Rachel Abbott 8.
Four players scored in double digits for the Mount Shasta boys, including Mark Maumasi, who scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in his first game back after an ankle injury kept him out of the first two SCL games.
Erik Thelander scored 19 points with 8 rebounds, Gene Kenyon scored 19 with 6 rebounds, and Tim Jaegel had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Mount Shasta returns home to face Burney Friday night. Burney’s teams are both 1-0 in league.
