Mount Shasta, Calif. -

Fall is the time for the Mount Shasta girls golf team to dust off their clubs and aim for another great showing, and they have plenty of experience to accomplish that.
Coach Audra Gibson has a roster of eight players, three seniors, three juniors, and two freshmen. Five are returning from last season, including two who qualified for the section tournament.
“This year we are going to enjoy the rewards of having a cultivated team,” Gibson said.
Gibson has high hopes and expectations. Not only does she  think that most of her players will qualify for sections, but also the team.
Gibson said junior Brittany Andrus has a natural gift for the sport and plenty of ability. She was one of the two Bears who qualified for sections.
During the last year, Andrus had knee surgery, but her scores were so exceptional she was able to qualify.
“[Brittany] doesn’t have an ego and plays for the joy of the game,” Gibson said. “She doesn’t know what having a bad game means yet, and I don’t know if she will.”
Senior Emma Taylor is the other returning section qualifier. She returns as a strong leader and gifted golfer as well. Gibson says that anything less than qualifying for her would be disappointing.
Returning seniors Kimmy McDermott and Michelle Coulter-Nava have been on the team for three years and both are strong competitors for qualifying.
Junior Kayla McDaniel is playing on the team for the first time this season and, according to Gibson, is making strides in all aspects of her game.
The team’s future looks bright, as this year’s two freshmen have been playing well in practice. Alexis Cheula and Jeanette Ricci have both played junior golf in Mount Shasta.   They have some experience and a strong basic knowledge of the game.
Gibson is excited about the year and putting all that she learned this summer to good use. She was recently certified by the California State Certification for Coaching.
The team’s first official match will be Sept. 18 at the Mount Shasta Resort against the other NAL teams.
